We are a family of 4 with college age kids
Time hilo hawaii love nature, hiking and local culture. We will be in the area arriving Hilo airport Dec 8 night, leaving Dec 14 night. We have 6 days. You said you are arriving in Hilo - are you also departing from Hilo?
What are your flight times, so people can best help you with your itinerary. Most folks would
Time hilo hawaii to visit Volcano National park and it would be good to stay one night in Volcano. People generally spend
Time hilo hawaii time on the west side of the island rather than the east - though that really depends on your interests. What is your nightly lodging budget?
We are arriving in Hilo airport Dec 8 at 8: We have done snorkling in cancun and carribean and would like to try in hawaii too. However, we would like to use the 6 days for seeing parts that are specailly hawaii - volcano NP, rainforest, waterfalls, hawaiian music, hula etc. Do not Time hilo hawaii to spend the time just laying on the beach but would like to Time hilo hawaii something each day - even if a scenic drive and hike.
I had thought that VNP as well as many other attractions are doable as a day trip if you stay on Hilo side. Perhaps I am wrong in this assumption since I can only judge based on google maps. Going in and out of Hiloand wanting to spend time on both sides of the island during a 6 day trip is a bit of a challenge. I would consider staying in Volcano or Hilo for the first 3
Time hilo hawaii, then head to the west side for 3 nights, and travel back to Hilo on your last day.
On the day that you move from east to west, you could take the north route and explore some sites along the way. On the way back, I would aim to be in Hilo by early afternoon, just in case you encounter any traffic delays along the way. Once you are back in the Hilo area you could take in another site that afternoon, e. I think you have enough time, as long as you "Time hilo hawaii" you won't see everything there is to see.
I would probably stay in Hilo the first night, since you're arriving late and the driving on many roads isn't great at night, but then I'd move to Volcano for a couple of nights, since it's, IMHO, a much better base for seeing HVNP. Then maybe move to Kona or Kohala Coast. We stayed at the Fairmont Orchidin South Kohalafor 5 nights, because my wife had a conference. Did some nice snorkeling in their lagoon and nearby.
We didn't see a lot in Hilo but that was fine, given
Time hilo hawaii schedule and the limited accommodations we stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian, probably the largest hotel in town, and it was so-so. We stayed at the Kilauea Lodge. Volcano House, in the national park, may reopen by the time you go.
If you want to do extra activities, such as a guide tour up Mauna KeaTime hilo hawaii may be rather rushed. Kohala Coast has better lodging. No beaches in Kona Town. December will probably be rainy Hilo -side. You'd have plenty of beach and snorkel time on Mauifor instance. There's no such place as " Kona Town. The courthouse and hospital are located there. If
Time hilo hawaii referring Kailua-Kona, then most clear where you are talking "Time hilo hawaii" if you use the actual name of the town.
The west side has much more to do than laze on the beach, and has a whole lot of culture, so perhaps Time hilo hawaii up more. There is a topic on must sees in the Top Questions. Another TQ goes over whether to stay Volcano Time hilo hawaii Hilo. My feeling is that you need more research before you think about committing
Time hilo hawaii your split or lodgings.
You should know what you plan to do. There is a good two weeks of activity on this large island just hitting the highlights. Seven days is a short trip for doing both sides, as you have already heard. Short trips demand more preparation and organization, as you cannot as well afford to figure out what you are doing when you Time hilo hawaii up that day the way someone with two weeks can.
There are only a smattering of cottages on the west side, so I am wondering if you have looked at lodgings yet. "Time hilo hawaii"
Of those, I think you may have trouble finding a minimum stay under five days, same with a condo. If you can find a puka hole of less than the minimum in the bookings that matches the dates, minimums may be waived. I suggest you go on VRBO and start looking to give yourself a foundation on your choices. By this I mean, make sure you have allowed enough time on each side for your must sees, as it would be very tricky to try and cram in more after you have set your date to change sides.
The Big Island presents a certain challenge in that some times are inflexible, such as the long drives. It is not about lazing. It is more that as long as you are driven and on the go, you stay inside your own heads. You cannot "receive" from the culture and the nature very well unless you slow down occasionally and allow it in. I would change the flights. If that's not possible, I would spend the first two nights in Hilo Normally Time hilo hawaii would recommend Volcano
Time hilo hawaii it
Time hilo hawaii likely to be quite cold and the last three nights in South Kohalaand spend your last day driving back from the west side to catch the night flight out of Hilo far from ideal.
It is a very awkward amount of time for the island, especially flying into and out of one side. As notes it's going to be difficult finding lodging that makes sense on the west side for such a short time. We spent 4 nights in Volcano in April, and I notice that per this link, weather in December is similar to April, with slightly more rain.
We didn't have a problem with the cooler temperatures, but we did go prepared with jackets and long pants for the evening. And having a cottage with heat which I hope is standard in Volcano helps. The OP mentions having 6 nights Dec. We flew into Hiloout of Konaand spent one night in Volcano, two nights in Hilo, and three in Kailua-Kona. I think the comments about Volcano being "quite cold" are relative.
We were comfortable in shorts and T-shirts most of the day, but did need a light jacket in the morning and evening. Average December temps in that area are 50s to upper 60s, but as with all weather predictions you will need to check the forecast as you get closer to the dates. As several folks have mentioned, with such a short time you will need to do some research and decide what particular activities you want to do, and then plan your itinerary accordingly.
You can see a lot in a week's time, but you will have to prioritize and it will involve quite a bit of driving, especially since you are flying into and out
Time hilo hawaii Hilo. It sounds like your interests are similar to ours. From there we drove to Kohala for a day, and then finished up with two days in Kona. It was a pretty jam-packed week and we barely scratched the surface of what the Big Island has to offer. Check out some Time hilo hawaii the Forum Topics for ideas on what you'd like to do, and I am sure the regulars will help you with specifics once you have a list of things that interest you.
